Beneath the streets of Paris lies a vast network of former limestone quarries, the source of much of the stone that built the city. In the late 1700s, faced with overflowing and unsanitary cemeteries, authorities began transferring human remains into a section of these tunnels, creating an underground ossuary that eventually held the bones of an estimated six million people. Opened to visitors in the 19th century, the Catacombs have fascinated the curious ever since.

The visit begins with a descent of many steps into the cool, quiet dark, followed by a walk through quarry passages to the ossuary itself — where the bones are not merely piled but arranged: walls of stacked femurs faced with rows of skulls, punctuated by inscriptions and memorials, stretching through chamber after chamber. It's somber and strange, a meditation on mortality beneath the living city, and unlike anything else in Paris.

Practical notes matter here. The route is about 1.5 km on foot, with a long stairway down and another up at the end (no lift), so it's not suitable for those with limited mobility. It's cool underground year-round, so bring a layer. Capacity is tightly limited and demand is high, so booking a timed ticket well in advance is essential to avoid very long queues or being turned away. The entrance is near Denfert-Rochereau in the 14th arrondissement, and the exit is a few streets away. It's atmospheric and fascinating, but consider whether the subject matter suits your group, especially young or sensitive children.
